Greta Thunberg has said her activism doesn’t necessarily bring her a lot of money or fame like any other typical influencer, but her net worth was over a million once, thanks to an award that she won.
The Swedish activist was detained on Tuesday during a protest at a coal mine in a German village. The 20-year-old has been closely involved in the fight against climatic changes for years, raising to fame in 2018 when she staged a strike by sitting outside the Swedish parliament while missing school.
Despite all her efforts towards saving the environment, the cause hasn’t contributed to her overall fortune, she revealed to The Times.
Greta Thunberg’s net worth was over a million
Even though multiple sites have estimated Greta’s net worth to be around $100,000 she claims she has donated all her money to charity.
The climate campaigner was awarded $1.15 million in 2020 when she won the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity. However, the huge fortune was hers only for a while as she gave it all up in donations.
Expressing her gratitude for the award, Greta shared in a Tweet: “We’re in a climate emergency, and my foundation will as quickly as possible donate all the prize money of 1 million Euros to support.”
She told in an interview with The Times: “The proceeds that I will make will go to charity. It would be nice to have money but by donation. For example, if I donate it to rewilding or nature conservation, I can start a debate on that. If I donate to refugees, you can talk about why – and then you can explain.”
Her only source of income is the student grant
Greta is one of the most influential people in the world. She was even named Time’s Person of the Year in 2019. But, her fame doesn’t equate to her income as her only source is the student grant she receives to go to the university.
She did not make any money from publishing The Climate Book either. “If I translate the book from English into Swedish, then I can get some kind of reimbursement for the time I spend doing that because I’m not doing it for promotion. It’s like a specific job.”
“When it comes to artists or influencers, they can earn money without people being mad at them, but I can’t,” she added.
When asked about her secret fortune of $1 million, she clarified it was the money she received from the award that she donated.
Swedish activist was detained and released
Greta was detained briefly at a protest against the demolition of a village for the expansion of the coal mine of Garzweiler. She was then released after her identity was verified.
The police carried the activist away from the edge of an open coal pit mine when many rushed towards the ledge. One of them even jumped into the mine.
The protest that was taking place a few miles away from the village of Luetzerath was reportedly led by 6000 activists.
