Police shoot, kill man who officers believe shot man downtown

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Officers with the Austin Police Department shot and killed a man on Colorado Street who they stated shot one other man downtown late Sunday evening, in keeping with Chief Joseph Chacon in his preliminary briefing of the incident.

Chacon stated officers instantly started life-saving measures, and the man later died on the hospital.

“During all of these events, I think this is important to stress, that this is the downtown entertainment district, there were people everywhere. Many on-foot, vehicles in the area as well. And generally this was a very, very active area of town despite the late hour,” stated Chacon.

Deaven Mabry, a pedicab operator who was working downtown when he heard gunshots, stated the violence was not a shock to him.

“I just kind of heard a couple gunshots,” he stated. “It was a little scary, but I’m kind of getting used to the occurrence here.”
